Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera

blackmagic design pocket cinema camera 6k pro

There's a reason why Sony, Arri or Canon cahrge you more. BM cameras are great paper tigers but from my experience are not very reliable, part of the reason why you almost don't see big movies shot on BlackMagic. @Samuel, I believe BM are producing a viewfinder for this camera, that does indicate shoulder mounting is a good possibility. I think with a suitable plate for a shoulder pad, battery power on the back and viefinder, this camera would have good balance on the shoulder. The Pyxis captures to CFexpress cards or outputs over USB-C to an external SSD or over Ethernet.

OK, they ignore in camera focus bracketing which is the single reason why my R3 collects dust but overall it and the R4 which I briefly had are solid still-camera packages. It is not true that true RAW requires more processing in post. You need transforms, just like for compressed log non-RAW video. And RAW is actually easier to play and render than highly compressed 10bit H265 files. They're designed to do heavy lifting so they have a lot of cooling capability.; functional for sure - pretty - not so much. Amazing value, and it also comes with DaVinci Resolve which is a pricey software.

It made me feel like a tiny but important cog in the machine. I was fortunate enough to snag some minutes with Maxon's CEO, David McGavran. A true industry veteran with over 20 years of experience, David's demeanor is as laid-back as his T-shirt and jeans. Despite his impressive background–which includes serving as Director of Engineering at Adobe Systems and working with some of the most prominent production houses–he's one of the coolest people you'll ever meet.

I doubt it is my tired eyes to blame here and not the EVF, yet, I’ll be very happy to be proven wrong. If you have been following my work for a while, you most probably know what I think about the necessity of having an EVF on EVERY filming device, especially if it’s tagged as a “Pro” or “Cinema” camera. And in this regards BM did very well by offering a “cable free” EVF to go along their new camera.

Blackmagic Design says the camera features its 5th generation color science, which was first seen in Blackmagic Design’s URSA Mini Pro 12K camera. Blackmagic Design says Pocket Cinema 4K and 6K users will also receive this updated color science via a firmware update within the next few months. But it also makes the camera taller and it doesn’t fit comfortably with how I like to balance my camera when I shoot hand-held. It’s definitely heavier than Blackmagic’s battery pack and it makes the camera larger overall, but the weight distribution and balance, the overall ergonomics, suit me better. It’s a personal choice, though, and if you’re looking to keep your camera lean and mean and looking clean, I think Blackmagic’s battery pack is an excellent option.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K features dual native ISO up to 25,600, which means it’s optimized to minimize grain or noise in images, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor. The native ISO of 400 is ideal for scenes with on-set lighting. The secondary high base ISO of 3200 is perfect when shooting in dimly lit environments.

The viewfinder has a 70 degree swivel range and comes with 4 different types of eyecups for both left and right eyes. You get a new dynamic 12-bit gamma curve designed to capture more color data in the highlights and shadows, for better looking images. The color science also handles some of the complex Blackmagic RAW image processing, so color and dynamic range data from the sensor is preserved via metadata which you can use in post production. That means you get images that have a natural, film like response to color adjustments in post with DaVinci Resolve. That means you get images that have a natural, film like response to color adjustments in post with DaVinci Resolve Studio. The Pocket Cinema Cameras feature dual gain ISO up to 25,600, which means they're optimized to minimize grain or noise in images, while maintaining the full dynamic range of the sensor.

But this Pyxis will no doubt have a good UI built in, with the proper English industry terms for everything, etc. There are other differences between a BlackMagic camera and a Panasonic mirrorless that might not be apparent without using them. This Pyxis will certainly record to SSDs plugged into the USB port. A lot of people will use it like that and then plug the drive into a computer to edit directly off the same drive. Yes, and the BS1H has almost none of the pros you mentioned earlier. And if you want to record RAW, you still have to attach BM Video Assist.

I've had at least one Asian lens manufacturer (who gets covered here occasionally) tell me that Sony's offer was a joke when I asked them why they were asking me questions about my RE efforts. Also, that 2011 publicity stunt has fine print even for lens makers people don't bother to read - they offer "basic" specifications. Depends upon what your definition of affordable is. I would say they abound but I do not know what you are willing to pay.

The results easily stack up to anything I’ve shot using cameras that cost three times the price. Located on the back of the camera are buttons to select the ND filters, as well as ones for High Frame Rate (for slow-motion shooting), focus-assist tools, menu access, and clip playback. A large, tactile start/stop record button perches on the camera’s integrated right-side handle, and a smaller one pokes out next to the top-right corner of the lens mount. An aperture wheel is set into the side handle as well. With high-end imaging technology, a tiny footprint, and loads of professional features, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro (BMPCC 6K Pro) looks, on paper, like a filmmaker’s dream.

This feature alone might be worth the extra cost over the original model for many users, including myself. I can only hope that other manufacturers will favourably consider to follow what Blackmagic Design did here and add an ND filter to their future compact (mirrorless) cameras. Over the years he has written for Wired, Stuff, GQ, T3, Trusted Reviews and PC Zone, and now lives on the Kent coast in the UK – the ideal place for a camera reviewer to ply their trade. You have a powerful computer Raw 6K video files are huge.

His penchant for tearing things down and rebuilding them did not make Mark popular at home, however, when he got his hands on the legendary Commodore 64, his passion for all things tech deepened. These days, when he is not filming, editing footage, tinkering with cameras and laptops, or on stage, he can be found at his desk snacking, writing about everything tech, new jokes, or scripts he dreams of filming. Most films are not shot in raw - especially not the ones in the price category this camera plays in.

For about $150, you can get an SSD that will capture for 15 minutes at the highest data rate. Outside of having to secure the media, external SSDs are a great lower cost option. All you do is plug them in via USB 3.1 and you are ready to format and shoot; it’s really easy. Another thing to note is that the camera will try to capture to any media you put in it.

Since they use the EF mount, that's already available. Mick232, AF is not purely software, AF cannot exist without electronics and motors moving the lens glass. It would cost them way too much money in R&D to even make a dent. But I really don’t think they have the resources to compete in the stills market. Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic and Fuji dominate stills and in a dwindling market (goodbye Olympus), do we need more competition. I think Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, and Olympus would argue with your “it’s just software” claim.

Blackmagic PYXIS supports creating a small H.264 proxy file in addition to the camera original media when recording. This means the small proxy file can upload to Blackmagic Cloud in seconds so their media is available back at the studio in real time. The ability to transfer media directly into the DaVinci Resolve media bin as editors are working is revolutionary and has never before been possible. Any editor working anywhere in the world will get the shots. With 3 models, customers can choose between L-Mount, EF or PL lenses, making Blackmagic PYXIS compatible with the largest range of cinema and photographic lenses in the world. The L-Mount model works with the latest full frame lenses from Leica, Panasonic and Sigma but can also accommodate lens adapters, allowing customers to use a wide variety of new and vintage lenses.

You can’t even turn off noise reduction on an FX3, whereas this Pyxis seems to be a full-blown cine camera. It’s not really viable in the context of showing something to a director while other people twiddle their thumbs. "where else could the display go?" They could've make a folding screen, like on old URSAs and the majority of mirrorless cameras. You can say it would increase the cost, but I'm sure that a hinge would increase the price less than buying an extenal monitor. The innovative side plates expand the riggability of their camera even further.
